Order of operations

If the roof is more than ten years old, do the roof first. A remove and reset of a full array later costs more than the roof work you would have done anyway, and the panels sit in a driveway while it happens.

Solar companies rarely warranty a roof they did not install. Getting the roofing done first keeps one company responsible for the water.

Mounts and flashing

Every mount is a hole in the roof. On a shingle roof each one needs a metal flashing that slides under the course above. On tile, the crew swaps in tile hooks or a flashed pan.

A mount sealed with only caulk will leak. Ask to see the flashing product the installer plans to use.

Working around an existing array

A roofer can pull an array, store it, do the roof, and set it back. Wiring gets disconnected and reconnected by a licensed electrician, and the utility may need a note about the work.

Get the roofer and the solar company talking to each other before the first crew shows up.
