Heat is the enemy

Asphalt ages by losing the oils that keep it flexible. Heat pulls those oils out. An attic that runs 150 degrees in August cooks the roof from below while the sun works on it from above.

That is why intake vents at the eave and exhaust at the ridge matter as much as the shingle brand. A well vented roof outlives a hot one by years.

What the state asks for

California energy rules ask for cool roof products on many reroofs in our climate zones. Cool rated shingles bounce more sun and hold less heat, and most major brands carry a rated line.

Your roofer files this with the permit. Ask to see the product rating on the paperwork so the inspection goes clean.
